1763 - 1802	The Academy was founded in 1763 by Count Carl Theodor of Pfälz (1724 - 1799). According to Rauter (1970), p.265, this Academy was founded with the German name Pfälzische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Palatinate Academy of the Sciences). Societas Meteorologica Palatina, also known as the Mannheimer Meteorologische Gesellschaft: In a Wikipedia article we read: “Die Societas Meteorologica Palatina, auch Mannheimer Meteorologische genannt, wurde 1780 als 3. Klasse der Mannheimer Akademie der Wissenschaften von Kurfürst Karl Theodor gegründet.” This indicates that the Societas Meteorologica Palatina was founded as a section of the Pfälzische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Mannheim. Towards the end of Carl Theodor's life, the situation of the Academy became increasingly grave. An 1802 date of termination is supported by the following passage in a page entitled Die Kurpfälzische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Mannheim (1763-1802): “Das Vermögen und die Sammlungen wurden 1802 nach München transferiert, die Mannheimer Akademie erlosch. ” The Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften (HAW) = Heidelberg Academy of Sciences was founded in 1909, and follows in the tradition of the Theodoro-Palatina Academy.
