According to Coley (2001), p.403, in 1783 George Fordyce (1736-1802) and John Hunter (1728-1793) founded the Society for the Improvement of Medical and Chirurgical Knowledge in London. This was a small group of only nine members; it later grew to twelve.

Coley (2001), p.409, footnote 56, indicates that the Society had gone down to ten members in 1812, and was dissolved in 1818.
