Founding of the Society

1806 According to Di Battista (2000), p.263, the Institute was founded in 1806 as the Regal Società d'Incoraggiamento alle Scienze Naturali, but it was also known contemporaneously as the Società d'Incoraggiamento per le Scienze e le Arti Utile. Di Battista (2000), p.263 notes that the Society was formed to meet two substantially different requirements: on the one hand to take up the inheritance of the then extinct eighteenth century Reale Accademia delle Scienze e Belle-Lettere di Napoli (1780-1788), and on the other hand to direct theoretical studies to socially useful applications that were encouraged by the state.
Di Battista (2000), p.263 also indicates that as a consequence of the founding in 1808, May [by King Giuseppe Napoleone Bonaparte] of the Società Reale (di Napoli) [see Società Nazionale di Scienze, Lettere e Arti in Napoli] it became necessary to change the name of the Society presently being considered to Istituto Regale d'Incoraggiamento. The change was by Royal decree of 1808, July 7. Di Battista (2000), p.263 points out that the fuller name was, in fact, Real Istituto d'Incoraggiamento alle Scienze Naturali di Napoli.
It seems likely that the Istituto no longer exists. A holdings record in the Cat. Ital. Per. ACNP for the Atti of the Istituto gives the holdings as 1888 - 1937. (We have seen other holdings records for this journal that give the end date as 1931.) We have found no evidence of the existence of the Istituto past 1937.
