1820	This date is supported by its website (). It is not absolutely clear what the name of the Society was at various times. The catalogue record in the Univ. Birmingham Lib. cat. for the Constitution and regulations of the Royal Society of Literature (pub. 1823) makes it clear that in 1823 the Society was referred to simply as the Royal Society of Literature. It is also referred to that way on its website () (as of 2024, February 10). Hence we conclude that it was probably known by the simple name Royal Society of Literature from 1823 to the present (that is, for most, if not all, of its existence). Its publications, however establish the longer name Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom from 1829 to around 1990 (again, for most, if not all, of its existence). It is possible that sometime in the 1990s the longer name was abandoned.
