This record includes the following historical information on this society, making it clear that it existed only from 1838 to 1849. The authority record states that “The Tasmanian Society was founded by Governor Sir John Franklin in 1838. It had no definite name, however, until 1842 when it was referred to in its journal, The Tasmanian Journal of Natural Science, Agriculture, Statistics etc:” The society experienced some organizational difficulties up to 1847. The authority record concludes by saying “In 1847 an unsuccessful attempt was made to unite with the new Royal Society of Tasmania and in 1849 the rules of the latter Society were altered to allow easy election of members of the Tasmanian Society.”
