1764

According to Schöne (2001), the founding assembly
of the Society took place in Leipzig on 1764, May 26 in response to a call
for the founding of such a Society that went out on 1763, October 14.
Schöne (2001) notes that a direct precursor of
this Society was the Thüringische Landwirtschaft-Gesellschaft,
which had been founded on 1763, July 8, but which, however, had ceased by
the end of the same year at the latest.
According to Schöne (2001), the main assemblies
always took place at Easter and at Michaelmas on the occasion of the Leipzig Fair.
Delegation sessions were transferred to Dresden at least from 1770, as was
the Secretariat. Moreover, since the year 1767, provincial assembies took place once
in a while in Leipzig, Dresden, Wittenberg, Zwickau, Freiberg, Neustadt, Suhl,
Meißen and in Merseburg.
Schöne (2001), indicates that the
Statutes of the Society make it clear that the Society was concerned with
the situation to do with foods in the broadest sense, including agriculture,
manufacturing and trade, and applications of mathematics, physics and chemistry
to these areas, in particular as regards Saxony and affiliated regions.
In his introductory remarks in his article,
Schöne (2001) refers to a lengthy lawsuit
between the Leipzig and Dresden economic societies from 1820 to 1825.
A bit later, he once again refers to that lawsuit, saying that it eventually
led to the partition of the Society. Near the end of the article, he refers
to the partition of 1825, indicating that it happened on the initiative of
the Leipzig members. Unfortunately Schöne (2001)
does not state explicitly
the names of the societies into which the Society was partitioned.
It is natural to assume that even though there appear to have been
two separate Societies, one for Leipzig and one for Dresden, already in 1820,
this may just have been a tentative separation, with the formal separation
occuring in 1825.
We find a slightly different account in
230. Wiederkehr der Gründung der Leipziger Ökonomischen Societät,
a publication by the 1990 reincarnation of the
Leipziger Ökonomische Societät. On p.8 of the pamphlet,
we learn that soon after the founding of the Society an attempt by the
Dresden members to separate had already begun, but that not until 1817 did
that lead to the actual secession of the Dresden members as the
Ökonomische Gesellschaft im Königreich Sachsen.
On p.8 of
230. Wiederkehr der Gründung der Leipziger Ökonomischen Societät
we also read that the last known traces of the original
Leipziger Ökonomische Societät were near the end of the 1930s.
The website
() of the
reincarnation of the Leipziger Ökonomische Societät
makes it clear that it was newly founded in 1990.
