A founding date of 1784 is mentioned on p.165 of
Gross (2001).
In an article on
Christian Daniel Beck (1757-1832) in
Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (ADB), Bd. 2,
pp.210-212, we read on p.212 that Beck was the editor of the two
journals
Commentarii societatis philologicae Lips. (1801-4 in 4
vols.) and
Acta regii seminarii philol. Lips. (1811-13 in 2 vols.)
It should be noted that the records for these two journals in the
GBV German Union cat. give corporate
author attributions of
Philologische Gesellschaft [Leipzig].
On 1809, December 4, it was elevated to the status of a
Königliche philologische Seminarium,
according to
Das Augusteum und dessen Übergabe an die Universität Leipzig
am dritten August 1836.
The fate of the Society after 1813 is unclear.
We can find later publications by a society with a similar name.
For example, there is a record in the
Zeitschriftendatenbank (ZDB) for
Acta Societatis Philologae Lipsiensis
1.1871/72(1872) - 6.1876 with an author attribution of
Philologische Sozietät [Leipzig].
There is record in the
GBV German Union cat. that gives
Friedrich Ritschl as editor of this journal.
It is unclear whether this corporate author
Philologische Sozietät [Leipzig] is the same as the
Philologische Gesellschaft [Leipzig] mentioned above.
We find further information on this latter publication in an article on
Friedrich Ritschl (1806-1876) in
Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (ADB), Bd. 28,
pp.653-661, where we read on p.659 that in Leipzig he published himself
(from 1870 to 1876) works of members of his "philological Society" [the German
original reads: seiner "philologischen Gesellschaft"] in 6
volumes under the title Acta societatis philologae
Lipsiensis, which covered almost all areas of study of classical
antiquity, and he himself did not neglect to make his own small
contributions to it.
What is particularly interesting here is the reference to "his"
[seiner] Society,
which conveys the impression that this was a small society that he founded
himself, and which bore no relation to the society founded in 1784.
Nonetheless, this information is not decisive in establishing a connection
or lack of connection with the 1784 society.
In addition, there is a record in the
GBV German Union cat. for
Theophrasts Charaktere / hrsg., erklärt und übers. von der
Philologischen Gesellschaft zu Leipzig
(Leipzig : Teubner, 1897).
This publication occured 21 years after the death of Ritschl.
It it unclear whether this Philologische Gesellschaft zu Leipzig
is the same as that of Ritschl, much less whether it is the same as
the society founded in 1784.
