According to a Wikipedia article entitled
Erdélyi Magyar Nyelvmívelő Társaság,
the establishment of a Transylvanian scholarly society was first proposed by Péter Bod in a letter on September 20, 1756.
Organizational work began in 1790, and a
proposal was submitted to the Transylvanian parliament on January 2, 1791.
After some negotiation, on December 3, 1793, the society was able to hold its inaugural meeting.
The society held fifty-two meetings between 1793 and 1801, the last on June 17, 1801, after which its activities declined.
Attempts were made in 1806 and 1816 to revive the society.
The General Government issued a decree on July 7, 1820, prohibiting the further operation of the organization.
The Wikipedia article goes on to note that after the first volume of its
Munkáinak had been published in 1796, a second volume, planned for 1798, was completed and passed censorship, but its publication failed due to financial reasons.
