1833	According to Gerabek (2002), p.169 the Naturwissenschaftliche Gesellschaft Isis was founded in Dresden on 1833, December 19. A Wikipedia article gives the following details of its history. The Society was founded on 1833, December 19 as a Verein zur Beförderung der Naturkunde. In 1835, the Society took the designation ISIS, in allusion to the goddess of antiquity, yet not referring to Egyptological research. The Society was, and still is, particularly interested in scientific research and exploration in Saxony. In 1844, specialized subject sections were established for botany, zoology, geology and mineralogy. Later, sections for mathematics, physics, chemistry and prehistory were added. According to an historical website, the Society resisted the Gleichschaltungspolitik (alignment politics) of the Nazis until 1939. In 1945 almost all their documents burned, but their Library, which had been conveyed to the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in the 1920s, remained safe. In spite of attempts after 1945 to continue the work of the Society, it lay dormant until 1990, September 21, when the Society was founded anew.
