In an archive collection at University College London, there is a document entitled Records of the College of Preceptor, where we read the following: “The College was founded in 1846, as the Society of Teachers, by a group of private schoolmasters from Brighton, led by John Parker, who were concerned about standards within their profession. Three years later it was incorporated by Royal Charter as the College of Preceptors.”

A Wikipedia article entitled Chartered College of Teaching, indicates that “A supplemental charter was granted in 1998 changing the name to the College of Teachers. A further supplemental charter granted in 2017 changed the society to its current name, and permitted the granting of Chartered Teacher status to members.”

Educational times; later Educational times, and journal of the college of preceptors; and resumed its earlier title Educational times from 1919 - 1923.

A record in the Oxford Univ. cat. indicates that the journal changed its title from Educational times to Educational times, and journal of the college of preceptors at a later date, but doesnot specify when.

The question of the relationship between the College of Preceptors and this journal, Educational Times is not absolutely clear. Early cataloguing records do not suggest a relationahip between this society and the journal.

We read, however, in The College of Preceptors and the Educational Times: Changes for British mathematics education in the mid-nineteenth century, the following statement: “Founded in Britain in 1846 to standardize the teaching profession, the College of Preceptors is little known today. The College was closely linked to the Educational Times (hereafter ET), a journal of "Education, Science and Literature" launched in 1847.” [Cited in the opening Abstract in Historia Mathematica, Volume 30, Issue 2, May 2003, Pages 140-172]

On the other hand, we read on p.152, British Journal of Educational Studies, Vol. 6, No. 2 (May, 1958): “The College of Preceptors, a year after its foundation (in 1846), began publishing The Educational Times (now Education Today).”

Education outlook and educational times.

In an archive collection at University College London, there is a document entitled Records of the College of Preceptor, where we read the following: “ Bound and loose copies of the 'Educational Outlook and Educational Times' (often referred to as the 'Educational Outlook'), the successor of 'The Educational Times'. It was published monthly and the numbering of the journal followed on from the Times, starting at Vol. 76. The journal was not the organ of any association, but it was distributed free to members of the College of Preceptors until 1929. In 1929 it also dropped the subtitle 'Educational Times'.”
