1866	According to Ferrari (2000), p.61, this Society first met in 1866, June as the Gabinetto di Lettura. Ferrari (2000), p.62 indicates that in the course of 1867, the Society took the name Società di Letture, and that at the end of 1868 it became the Società di Letture e Conversazioni Scientifiche. It should be noted that its publications, the Effemeridi (1870-1875) and Giornale (1877-1899) use a slightly longer form of this name: Società di Letture e Conversazioni Scientifiche di Genova. The Society published journals from 1870 - 1917. The next publication of theirs listed in the SBN Ital. Union cat. is one from 1955 (Amicizia e poesia nella vita di Emanuele Sella), in which the Society is referred to as the Società di Letture e Conversazioni Scientifiche. According to its website (), when the Society ceased its journal in 1917, it also concluded its golden period of activity, which was followed by a long period of crisis and a difficult battle during the Fascist regime to defend the independence and freedom that the Society had experienced when it first arose. Its website () goes on to say that the Society was revived in the post-war period, and began again its activities in the 1950s, and later published its I Quaderni from 1982-1987. From this we may conclude that a significant part of the period of 1917 to 1955, when the Society appears to have published nothing, may have been a period of relative dormancy.
