This is an excellent listing of scientific serials published across the
world up to the year 1876.
In general, the compiler excluded "publications dealing exclusively
with Medicine, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Horticulture, Technology,
Manufactures, Philology and History..."
Bibliographic and historical information about journal titles is given in
the main section of this work, which is
arranged first by country, subarranged by city of publication, and then
sorted alphabetically.
The geographical arrangement is particularly useful in deciphering early
abbreviations of society journal titles,
if a place name figures prominently in the name of the society.
There is an Appendix with Corrections.
There is an Index of Towns, and an Index of
Titles (actually the titles are listed in Scudder's own
abbreviationed form). Finally there is an Index of Minor
Subjects that identifies journals on subjects like Botany, and
Meteorology.
