Clavis pro Sigla ad Titulos Actorum Adhibenda
A Key to Abbreviations Used for Journal Titles
A Guide to the Use of this Key

This Google search engine searches the entire corpus of the Scholarly Societies Project, which includes, among other things:

  • abbreviations of the titles of journals published by scholarly societies that were founded prior to 1850, and
  • abbreviations of the titles of a selection of independent journals from the early period as well.

To use this key effectively:
  1. Firstly, enter your search expression without quotation marks around it, for a fairly broad search.
    • This will retrieve pages containing your search terms.
    • If you do not immediately see your search term on a retrieved page, then open that page, and use the Find command of your operating system (Control+F for Windows, and Command+F for MacIntosh) on the same search term. You will then find the precise places on the retrieved page where your search term occurs.
  2. Secondly, if your search retrieved more results than you want, then consider restricting it either by using quotation marks to obtain an exact match, or by adding more search terms that may assist in narrowing down the list of restuls.
