[This body was founded on 1851, July 18 as the Encümen-i Daniş by Sultan Abd al-Majid (1823-1861), whose name is given in Arabic script as عبد المجيد. The place of founding was probably Constantinople. We have seen the name of the body translated into English as High Consultative Committee, but it has also been referred to in English as the Ottoman Academy and in Turkish as an academy of sciences. It was abolished in 1862, after the death of the Sultan who founded it.]
