Founding of the Society

Authority / Notes
1772
This date is supported by its website (), where we also learn that the Society received its Royal Charter from King Gustaf III in 1778.

The name of the Society has remained much the same since 1772 except for the addition of the royal designation, and orthographic changes in the Swedish words for "physiographic" and "royal". The spelling Physiographiska appears to have been used as late as 1838; the spelling Fysiografiska appears to have been used as early as 1899. We find Kongliga (and Kongl.) as late as 1911 in a publication of the society entitled Eine neue Methode zur Zuckerbestimmung. It seems likely, however, that the change to Kungliga (and Kungl.) was complete by the end of World War One.

1899? - 1911? Kongl. Fysiografiska Sällskapet i Lund This is supported by an examination of the records for individual volumes of the new series of the Handlingar. We know that this name was used until at least 1911, because of a series note in the record for the following 1911 title in the Univ. Calif. cat.: Eine neue Methode zur Zuckerbestimmung.
1919? - Kungl. Fysiografiska Sällskapet i Lund The general orthographic change from Kongliga to Kungliga was likely complete after the World War One.

Kungl. Fysiografiska Sällskapets i Lund Handlingar = Acta Regiae Societatis Physiographicae Lundensis

According to the record in the Univ. Calif. cat., this title forms a new series (Ny Följd) continuing its Handlingar, 1776-86, i.e. A.

The record in the Univ. Calif. cat. also supplies the Latin form of the title, and gives the publishing dates as: 1889/90-

The records in the Libris Swedish Union cat. give the publishing dates as 1899-1963.

An examination of the individual records for volumes of this title show that the title used the older spelling for "Royal" until at least 1911. That is, from 1899 to at least 1911, the title was Kongl. Fysiografiska Sällskapets i Lund Handlingar.
