Founding of the Society
Founded in 1786 by King Gustaf III as Svenska Academien, the Academy had as its original goal to work for the "purity, vigour and majesty" of the Swedish language. To this end the Academy produced an authoritative dictionary and grammar of the Swedish language.

At some point, the name was changed to its modern spelling, Svenska Akademien. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Academy also took on the task of administering the Nobel Prize for literature.
