Chronological List of Early Independent Journals

This area is concerned with "independent journals" - that is, with journals that were not published by scholarly societies. In point of fact, in the early years of their existence, the independent journals served primarily as a vehicle for reviewing works of original reseach that were located in monographs or in the journals published by scholarly societies.

The bulk of the abbreviations of these independent journals were located through perusal of the first few hundred pages of Band 1 of Pogg..

The first journal in this sequence was: Allgemeines Journal der Chemie / Hrsg. von D. Alexander Nicolaus Scherer, Bergrath und Professor [Bd. 1.1798 - 10.1803 = Jg. 1-5 = Nr. 1-60]

This latter journal was continued by Neues allgemeines Journal der Chemie / hrsg. von Adolph Ferdinand Gehlen [Bd. 1.1803 - 6.1806 = Jg. 1-3]

Continued by Journal für die Chemie, Physik und Mineralogie / hrsg. von Adolph Ferdinand Gehlen [1.1806 - 9.1810]

Continued by Journal für Chemie und Physik [1.1811 - 60.1830; 3.R. 1=61.1831 - 9=69.1833] NOTE: For convenience, we shall label this journal as (A).

Meanwhile, two other journals were founded: (B) Journal für technische und ökonomische Chemie [1.1828 - 18.1833] and (C) Neues Jahrbuch der Chemie und Physik : eine wissenschaftl. Zeitschrift d. Pharmaceutischen Instituts zu Halle [1.1831 - 9.1833]
