Founding of the Society
Year
Authority / Notes
1652
A founding date of 1652, January 1 is given at the website of the Leopoldina Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften ().

The society was founded as Collegium Naturae Curiosorum (College of Those Inquisitive of Nature, i.e. College of Researchers) in 1652 by four physicians in Schweinfurt, Germany, as an academy devoted primarily to the healing arts.

In 1687, it incorporated the name of its patron Leopold I, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire into its official name, according to p.46 of Berg & Parthier (2000), where it is noted that the Academy was elevated in 1687 to the status of an imperially protected institution with the name Sacri Romani Imperii Academia Caesareo-Leopoldina Naturae Curiosorum.

NOTE: Their website clarifies the designation Leopoldino-Carolina used through a significant period of its existence: “Founded in Schweinfurt in 1652, and vested with privileges by Emperor Leopold I in 1687 that were confirmed by Emperor Karl VII in 1742, the Academy is identical with and constitutes the uninterrupted continuation of its predecessor, the "Imperial Leopoldina Carolina German Academy of Natural Scientists".”

Since that day, some variant of Leopoldina or Leopoldinisch has generally appeared in the name of this society.

More information on the founding and early history of the Academy is found in Berg & Parthier (2000).

Miscellanea Curiosa; sive, Ephemeridum Medico-Physicarum Germanicarum

There is a review of the 1670 (1st year) volume of the Miscellanea Curiosa in Phil. Trans., Vol.5, No.68, (1670) pp.2077-2082 (this sequence appears twice in Vol.5 due to a mistake in the pagination; the review appears in the 2nd sequence); the title is given as Miscellanea Curiosa Medico-Physica Academiae Naturae Curiosorum.

There is a review of the 1671 (2nd year) volume of the Miscellanea Curiosa in Phil. Trans., Vol.7, No.85, (1672) pp.5024-5026; the title is given as Miscellanea Curiosa Physico-Medica Academiae Naturae Curiosorum.

There is a review of the 1673 (3rd year) volume of the Miscellanea Curiosa in Phil. Trans., Vol. 9 (1674), pp.15-18; the title is given as Ephemeridum Medico-Physicarum Germaniae.

There is a review of the 1673 (4th year) and 1674 (5th year) volumes of the Miscellanea Curiosa in Phil. Trans., Vol. 11 (1676), pp.742-744; the title is given as Ephemeridum Medico-Physicarum Germanicarum.

Both Univ. Chicago cat. and Harvard Univ. cat. indicate that this was called Miscellanea Curiosa Medico-Physica for 1671 - 1675/1676.

Scudder #2808a, however, indicates that it was called Miscellanea Curiosa Medico-Physica, sive Ephemeridum Medico-Physicarum Germanicarum Curiosarum for a much longer period: 1671 - 1705.

And CISTI cat. indicates that it was called Miscellanea Curiosa Medico-Physica Academiae Naturae Curiosorum, sive, Ephemeridum Medico-Physicarum Germanicarum Curiosarum for 1670 - 1675/1676.
