Founding of the Society
Year
Authority / Notes
1772
According to p.18 of Genner the founding date was 1772 September 9. And on p.19 of Genner, we learn that the prime mover in the founding was Johan Clemens Tode (1736-1806), who was also involved in the founding of several other Copenhagen societies: Kirurgiske Privatselskab (1771-1783), Societas Exercitatoria Medica (1774-1785), and Societas Philiatrica (1787-1791).

The Society received the Royal designation on 1782 June 15, according to pp.37-38 of Genner. It then became the Kongelige Medicinske Selskab (Royal Medical Society).

The Societas Philiatrica (Society of Medical Knowledge) was founded 1829 May 29 as an alternative to the Royal Medical Society (p.176-177, Genner). [Note: This is not to be confused with an earlier society of the same name that existed from 1787 to 1791.]

As early as 1845 there were discussions to merge the two societies. According to pp.180-190 of Genner, these discussions were not successful until the centennial of the Royal Society, 1872. On 1872 October 31 the two old Societies met together for the first time (Genner pp.190-191).

At that meeting (or another one before the end of the year), they voted to remove the royal designation and adopt a new name, whose translation into English is Medical Society of Copenhagen (Genner p.195).

An authority record on p.137, v.373 of NUC Pre-1956 Imprints indicates that

The Kongelige Medicinske Selskab was established in 1772 in Copenhagen. In 1872 it merged with Philiatrien, also in Copenhagen, to form Medicinske Selskab i København.
Although this note obscures the fact that the older society did not have the royal designation until 1782, it does provide us with the Danish names for the Societas Philiatrica and the new society.

According to the NUC pre-1956 Imprints, v.373, p.137, this volume was called ny raekke in continuation of the Society's Acta, the last volume of which was published in 1829.

So we conclude that this continues D.
